I have had this skirt in my closet for a long, long time. I rarely pull it out because of the fit - blouses don't stay tucked in and most of my sweaters are too long or too baggy, so it makes me look frumpy. This skirt is a little baggy through the hips, sits really low on the waist, and for its shape, could be about one inch shorter.  Unfortunately, while I could get it hemmed, the sides can not really be tailored because of the details. Of course, the detailing is also the reason I refuse to get rid of it! What a predicament!

This all brings me to a really important point: fit is huge when it comes to building a wardrobe! I struggle a lot with finding professional clothes that fit me. In all honesty, many of my clothes are tailored - nearly every pair of pants I own is hemmed, many of my skirts are tailored (length and waist), and lately, even some of my jackets have gone to the tailor. I'm a little too tall for petites but too short for regulars. Work wear is particularly difficult if it doesn't fit. For me, if my clothes are frumpy, I feel like I played dress up in my mother's closet. I get mistaken for a law student all the time (yesterday I got asked how many years I had left  in law school after I introduced myself to opposing counsel at the courthouse), so I feel much more confident when I know my clothes at least fit.

So, key point, if clothes don't fit, either find a good tailor or pass on it...there is so much out there that if something is too short, too tight, or way to big, another great piece will come along soon!

  8. It's definitely frustrating not being able to fit into standard sizes. Sometimes petite clothing is still too long for me. sigh.

  9. I think it's so hard to find professional clothes that fit too. I think I would have to hem any pair of pants I could find. You look darling though! I love the black tights with the black pumps. So classy!
