Speaking of the bar association event and boldness: the event was a women lawyer event of sorts and the main speaker was an incredible woman who has had a long and accomplished legal career. Though, her resume alone does not fully describe her. She is maybe 5 feet tall with long blonde hair and approached the podium in a gorgeous magenta skirt suit. Not what you usually see at these events! One of the first things she expressed was her belief that women should be bold on all fronts. They should be bold in their legal careers, in the causes they support and the way they support them, and, most relevant here, they should be bold in their attire. She mentioned her dislike of black suits and how that is the norm for women in the legal field, as if we feel like we are doing something wrong if we stand out. Ultimately, she believed being bold would help facilitate the change she wanted to see, and for her, it has! I think her words of wisdom carry into all parts of anyone's life, not just lawyers.
As I stood there in this printed dress, I couldn't help but stand a little taller as she spoke these words. It really made me think about how many times I'm concerned that what I wear is too bright for the court room and how maybe standing out (so long as I have the abilities to carry myself through) might not be so bad. With that being said, it is always important to know your audience and be conscious of the impact boldness can make. I wouldn't wear a magenta suit on trial where a jury is deciding the fate of my client. From now on, maybe I should reach for something a little brighter than my black suit (or blazer) more often.

Hi! Came across your site today and LOVE IT! I work in a setting where suits and professional wear is enforced. Sometimes I run out of options. I've really enjoyed your previous posts of everyday work-wear.. it has given me some new ideas. Thanks!
